After returning for his second stint as co-host of talkSPORT’s Drivetime show on Thursday celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan was not short on suggestions as to what he would like to see happen at Arsenal.

The long-time season ticket holder professes to know exactly what Arsenal needs to do to become the all-conquering team once more.

First off and it is a regular cry from Morgan that the club needs to fire long-serving manager Arsene Wenger.

“I certainly believe we need a change [of manager]. Randomly, I had a conversation with Mo Farah this morning [Thursday] and we were talking about Arsenal and what he said to me was: ‘I moved to America for the main body of my training because I knew it would give me an extra half a second of speed which would make the difference between coming third or fourth and winning’. We now know that worked and he has won. What I am talking about at Arsenal is moving from Wenger, who is certainly a great manager and has been great for Arsenal, to something that would give us that extra percentage that takes us from being the bridesmaid to the bride. If you put Diego Simeone or Jurgen Klopp into the Arsenal set-up they would get rid of the dead wood, they would buy the right gritty, tough players to go around all the dazzlingly skilful players we have, and we would be seriously competitive again. Until we get the right attitude among the players, then we are not going to compete with the big boys.”

The next step for the former tabloid editor would be to ditch Olivier Giroud.

“Giroud is a second-tier striker. Mesut Ozil is used to having [Karim] Benzema and [Cristiano] Ronaldo in front of him. He currently has lesser players, excluding Alexis Sanchez. Giroud is scoring goals at the moment and playing quite well, and is a good striker, but he is nowhere near the level of a Ronaldo, a [Lionel] Messi, a [Luis] Suarez, a Neymar. Ozil, who is a thoroughbred racehorse, is playing in the Grand National, not the Derby, and he needs players around him who can play at the Derby level that suit his style of football.”

Lastly the Gunners need to be ruthless when it comes to the transfer market.

“Arsenal have got to bring in a world class goalkeeper we have not had since the days of [Jens] Lehmann and [David] Seaman and at least two central defenders, who are top, top drawer. Up front we have got to have an absolute predator. If we want to win things, we have got to be brutal in our policy of signing world class players and making sure they have around them the type of players that will bring out the best in them.”
