Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been on the lookout for a tough defending midfielder for some time, now as he tries to fit the pieces of the puzzle all together, and while it looked as though Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira was a distinct possibility there was always going to be a problem with his wage demands which would have made him the clubs highest paid player.

Other names also being talked about were Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin and Sporting Lisbon youngster William Carvalho.

It now looks if the website Caught Ofside is correct, that Wenger is once more turned his attention to Newcastle United and its Ivorian star Cheick Tioté after learning that he was available for a sum of £8 million as owner Mike Ashley looks to balance the books following manager Alan Pardew’s £30 million summer spending spree.

The tough tackling midfielder is also said to be keen on a move to the Emirates where he will team up with former Newcastle man Mathieu Debuchy, and at only 28-years old still has a few good years left in him yet.
