Jan Vertonghen has pleaded with Ajax not to price him out of a move to Tottenham this summer.

Vertonghen urges Ajax not to price him out of Spurs switch

Spurs boss has admitted his interest in the central defender, who only has one year left on his contract with the recently crowned Dutch champions.

And Vertonghen has urged Ajax chiefs not to stand in his way of a switch to White Hart Lane, with the 25-year-old desperate to play in the Premier League.

“The Ajax board are asking for a very big amount for a player whose contract is running out in year,” he said, speaking to De Telegraaf newspaper.

“I trust that both Tottenham and Ajax will put some water in the wine and they will soon reach an agreement.

“I owe a lot to Ajax but I have always given my heart and soul. My appreciation for the club and fans is great and it would be terrible if my farewell was marred by Ajax sticking to a great price.

“Of course I want Ajax to gain financially but the amount Tottenham are willing to pay – perhaps with a little extra – is very reasonable.”

A number of clubs across Europe have been linked with a move for Vertonghen but the Belgium international admits he has his heart set on a move to north London.

“Tottenham is a fantastic football club,” he said. “Ajax was the perfect club for me, but Spurs will be very close in nearing that already. They buy young, eager and offensive-minded players.”
