Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen is unconcerned about the outcome of the title race, because he is so focused on securing Champions League football for the Gunners next season.

Vermaelen braced for 'big fight' with Spurs & Chelsea

Following a 1-0 triumph over Manchester City on Sunday, Arsenal are in third, five points clear of fifth-place Chelsea and two ahead of rivals Tottenham. Newcastle are also well in the mix in sixth position, level on points with Chelsea.

But despite his side sitting comfortably, Vermaelen is refusing to fall into the trap of complacency, with some tricky fixtures to come before the end of the season, including a home fixture against Chelsea.

“We know Manchester City and Manchester United are in a fight for the title, but we are also in a massive fight for third place, which is really important,” Vermaelen said.

“We only look at ourselves and try to win every game. It was a really important win, especially after the result from last week because we are in a big fight for third place.”
