Although the Netherlands international is happy at White Hart Lane, rumours have persisted that he might force through a move to the German side to be closer to his wife Sylvie.

Tottenham's Rafael van der Vaart refuses to rule out move to Schalke
Rafael van der Vaart is not ruling out a move to Germany

Mrs Van der Vaart works at a TV station that is based less than an hour’s drive from Schalke’s training ground.

Speaking about the possibility of a switch of clubs, the player told German newspaper Bild: ‘I don’t know. Actually, I want to stay at Tottenham. But in football, you never know.’

He went on to point out that his previous moves to Real Madrid and Spurs came out of the blue, meaning he cannot rule out another shock switch in the future.

Van der Vaart previously played in Germany for Hamburg and admitted he and Sylvie loved their time in the country.

He told how they have ‘many friends’ there and memories of a ‘wonderful time’ during a three-year stint in the northern city.

Any potential move for skilful playmaker Van der Vaart will come as a devastating blow to Spurs, who are already facing a battle to hang on to Gareth Bale, while manager Harry Redknapp is being linked with Chelsea.
