The way Arsenal went about trying to sign Real Madrid striker this summer was embarrassing says Gunners legend Ian Wright.

Manager Arsene Wenger was strongly linked with a move for the French international throughout the summer transfer window but ultimately came away with nothing as the 27-year-old decided he would prefer to remain with the Spanish giants declaring his commitment to Los Blanco’s in a tweet.

Wright, who scored 128 goals for Arsenal during his time at the club, believes that the whole saga was just embarrassing and humiliated his former employers.

The former Arsenal great told BT Sport : “The Benzema thing was quite embarrassing”.

‘The way that they pursued it. If you’re trying to get a player like that you find out straight off the bat “are you interested in coming?” If you’re interested, we’ll pursue it.

‘I thought the way they dealt with that was pretty bad in the end and the way he mugged Arsenal off in the end on Twitter, it wasn’t good.’
