Arsenal number one goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny last night admitted that his teammate and goalkeeping rival Lukasz Fabianski deserved to play in goal during the FA Cup final between Arsenal and Hull City according to the Daily Mirror.

It would be a remarkable move by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger should he decide to leave out Fabianski, who was the hero of a penalty shootout against Wigan which ultimately got them in the final should Wenger decide to drop him for what most probably will be his last ever game for the club as his contract comes to an end.

Szczesny said: “Lukasz has done so well he deserves to play, but having said that I’m a professional and I would love to play in the Cup final.

“I speak with Lukasz but I haven’t spoken to the boss about it. There’s no banter (with Lukasz).

“Look, we’re both professional and we would both love to play in the cup final. It’s the boss’s decision to make, not an easy one, because there is a No.1 at the club and a goalkeeper who is the reason we are in the FA Cup Final.”

Wenger is still eager for Fabianski to stay at Arsenal, but the 29-year-old keeper has turned down offers and snubbed Wenger’s pleas as he is eager to play regular first team football something he will not see at Arsenal so long as Szczesny remains the Frenchman’s first choice.

Szczesny has also said how pleased the team are that Wenger has decided to sign a new contract adding: “We all trust him. He’s our manager and shown a lot of trust in a lot of the players and we owe a lot to him. It would be great to see him stay for a long time.”

The Pole goes on to say that despite finishing fourth and getting in the FA Cup final the season could have been so much more: “I never considered fourth place before the start of the season as a successful season and a good position,” said Szczesny. “I play for Arsenal because I want to win the title every year.

“Injuries made a difference. You could see when Mesut Özil and Aaron Ramsey came back recently we started winning games.

“We have improved, and one thing we have learned is we are good enough to challenge next year, and hopefully add a couple of new players.”
