Sunderland set to hijack Liverpool move for Dempsey

The American international has been frozen out at Fulham after asking to leave the club, and reports claim he and manager Martin Jol are no longer speaking.

The 29-year-old attacker has been tracked by Liverpool for a number of weeks, but talkSPORT understands Sunderland are now ahead in the race to sign him.

Black Cats boss Martin O’Neill has splashed out more than £20m in the last few days to sign Steven Fletcher from Wolves and Adam Johnson from Manchester City, and wants to add Dempsey to his new-look squad.

And talkSPORT has been told Dempsey could have a medical as early as Monday as his five-year stay at Fulham comes to an end.
