Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has already admitted that he will need to make at least a handful of signings during the summer if Liverpool are to repeat this season and compete for the title telling the Liverpool Echo newspaper that two defensive signings, a centre-back and a full-back will be a priority to help shore up a defence that has let in far too many goals this last season.

“It’s fairly clear where we need to improve,” Rodgers told the ECHO.

“Our home record in terms of conceding goals is good, we’re ranked in the top five – we’ve only let in 17 at home.

“But that figure of 32 away is too high. It’s about concentration and unfortunately that’s something I’ve seen here for a bit of time.

“The defence is the one area where there hasn’t been a lot of change in terms of players coming in or out. It’s an area we will be better in. I will ensure that.

“You can’t go away to Old Trafford, Southampton and White Hart Lane and not concede yet let in three at Stoke, Hull, Cardiff and Palace. That’s down to concentration, it’s not structural. It certainly won’t happen next season that’s for sure

“If you can’t keep your concentration long enough then you’ll lose your place in the squad.

“One, we need reinforcements. Two, we will really put an emphasis on that part of the field next season.

“When I came in the struggle was to score goals. We have addressed that. It’s about finding the balance.

“If it’s not here within the current group we’ll buy. I will definitely bring in a number of players in that area during the summer. For what we’re doing, it’s something I need to improve on.”

* Brendan Rodgers has confirmed he will pen a new long-term contract this summer.

Rodgers has confirmed that he has been in talks with the owners but will not announce anything until the end of the season.

He said: “I’ve obviously been in discussions with the club and there is the framework of a deal in place. But I have always said it will be at the end of the season.

“I want nothing to detract from what has been a great season for ourselves.”
