After having watched yet another lack lustre performance by Liverpool in which striker Mario Balotelli once more failed to score since his £16 million move from AC Milan as Liverpool lost 1-0 away to Basel of Switzerland in the Champions League Reds boss Brendan Rodgers insisted that the Italian striker must do more for the team.

This is in contrast to Arsenal’s new signing Danny Welbeck who has hit the ground running scoring his first ever hat-trick against Turkish giants Galatasaray.

“He worked hard, but needs to do more,” said the Liverpool boss.

“He will be judged on what he creates and what he scores and he didn’t score.

“But the boy is trying, he is working hard.”

Rodgers also went on to condemn the Reds poor defending adding:

“We defended very, very poorly on the corner and it’s not the first time so it’s very, very disappointing we couldn’t get something from the game,” The Northern Irishman told Sky Sports.

“I think it [set-piece defending] is something we continue to talk about and look at and analyse, but you have to do it on the field and the key to defending is your first contact with the ball and we continually don’t do that enough.”
