Everyone knows by now of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger’s desire to sigh French international striker Karim Benzema from Real Madrid, but what they did not know is that the Gunners have a secret back-up plan in place should they fail to sign the 27-year-old.

Spanish journalist Kike Marin has revealed in newspaper El Confidencial that if Wenger cannot sign Benzema he will go after the £44.7 million rated Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski.

The Gunners are desperate to bring in a world-class striker this summer, and know that they now have the best team they have had in years to push for the Premiership title.

When speaking about the possibility of the 26-year-old leaving Bayern Munich his agent, Cezary Kucharski, told Polish television that his client could be interested in a move to England.

Kucharski said: ‘With a player of Robert’s class, the truth is that not a lot of work is required because really there are only two directions in which he could go in the future, England or Spain, and only with Bayern Munich’s acceptance.

‘Robert is one of the most valued strikers on the market who guarantees goals, guarantees assists, excitement.

‘He has shown that over many years during his career.

‘Every year he is an even better player and plays at a higher level and that is very important for other clubs because he has credibility and guarantees at least 30 goals a season.’

The Bayern Munich striker is also being linked with a big money move to Manchester United, with Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal also needing a top class finisher after having let go both Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie.
