Former Arsenal player, Charlie Nicholas has implored his former club to sign Real Madrid and former Lens French centre-back Raphael Varane rather than spending big money to sign in-form Napoli and Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain.

Charlie disclosed to Sky Sports saying, “I accept over the last two months that the central striker area has been a massive problem, but there’s been a problem from day one and that’s at centre-back. “

“There’s the soft excuse that Alexis Sanchez, Olivier Giroud, Danny Welbeck and Theo Walcott have all had their injury problems, but for me the biggest issue exists at the back. “

“If I had a position to buy right now and a choice between centre-forward and Raphael Varane, my priority would be Varane.

“If they get Gonzalo Higuain in for say £50 million and keep conceding two or three goals then they won’t still win anything”.

Arsenal were tipped for the Premier League earlier this season after the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United appeared to have bottled their chances .

However, the story did not end well as the North London team made a mess of the situation and joined the others who were already out of the running as early as January. It appears to be seen if Arsene Wenger will listen to the advise of Charlie or stick to his own perspective like he has always done in recent times.

I personally agree with Charlie. Arsenal needs a solid centre back to play alongside Koscielny and Varane will be a good signing and I believe Real Madrid will be willing to sell the young Frenchman this summer especially as Ramos and Pepe are still at the club and they will need to sell couple of players to raise money for their other bigger signings.
