Every time he gets injured Puyol shows he’s a specialist at beating the doctors’ estimates of when he’ll be back.

And, once again, it looks like the same is going to happen with the elbow he dislocated on 2 October in Portugal, against Benfica.

Back then the Barcelona medical team thought he was likely to be out for eight weeks, and prescribed a conservative treatment plan for the club captain.

But, or so it seems, the pain from the elbow has reduced to the point where the footballer himself has set a goal of being back next week for the game against Mallorca.

Puyol now has a high degree of mobility in the joint, and the next few days will be key to see if he can make the squad to take on the islanders.

The Barça squad are back in training today after a day off yesterday.

The big question is whether Piqué, whose foot injury is taking far longer than expected to heal, be there?

Even if he is however it seems unlikely that he will be able to play tomorrow against Celta.

If he does train the most likely scenario would be that he reappears against Celtic, in Glasgow.

In any event Vilanova can count on Mascherano, Bartra and Song to cover the central defender’s position.

Bartra, the academy player has shown he has more than enough talent to play there, despite the few chances he’s had.
