Arsene Wenger has set his sights on making Jan Vertonghen Arsenal’s next signing after unveiling Lukas Podolski, the worst kept transfer secret in football.

Arsenal and Cologne jointly announced the £10.9million deal for Germany ace Podolski who will join up this summer on a four-year contract.

It is part of Wenger’s plan to do early business this summer and Arsenal are set to follow up with a move for Ajax’s versatile Belgian defender Vertonghen, 25, next.

He is hoping to join Arsenal for a cut-price £7m as he only has one year left on his contract. Wenger is also chasing Rennes’ French international midfielder Yann M’Vila.

Podolski 26, has scored 43 goals in 95 caps for Germany. He said: “Arsenal are one of the top clubs in Europe with a huge history. There are many top quality players at Arsenal and the style of football which the team plays is fantastic.”

Wenger added: “We see Lukas as an important part of our future.”
