If reports coming out of England is anything to go by, Arsenal have launched a bid to sign young Bolton defender Rob Holding, in a bid to replace the ageing Per Mertesacker. An overhaul is definitely expected at the end of the season for the Gunners who will be looking to see where they got it wrong and will try to amend their mistakes.

And since major stakeholders in the club are also interested in a ‘end-of-the-year review, it is most likely new names will be seen at the beginning of next season.

And one of those to likely become an Arsenal player is Bolton’s Rob Holding. The 20-year old defender who made 30 appearances for the Wanderers was, by far, one of the standout performers in a terrible season that saw Bolton relegated from English Championship football.

And now, according to Bolton news reporter Marc Iles, Arsenal are “now involved” with Holding and “all signs point” to a bid having been tabled. Bolton interim manager Jimmy Philips has also officially confirmed this news which means the deal is all but done.

Rob Holding was voted the Player of the Year by the Bolton Wanderers fans. It is odd that Arsenal are going for such an unknown name as likely replacement for Mertesacker especially as they still have Calum Chambers.

It will be suicidal if the Bolton player is who Wenger seems as the long term replacement for Mertesacker. Personally, I think Wenger should sign an established player that will partner Koscienly in the centre of Arsenal’s defence and not another unknown name.
