After finally signing a new contract Arsene Wenger has once more gone from being negative to positive, and I can only hope that he knows something that the rest of us do not know.

Just last month prior to the FA Cup victory over Hull City the 64-year-old Frenchman was telling fans not to get too excited about summer signings saying that he would be making two possibly three, and that is was always a difficult summer to get business done and that he would be waiting until after July 15th before making any new signings for Arsenal.

“It will be busy, but the main thing for us will be to keep the stability because we feel we are close. We want to add something that makes us even stronger, but, number wise, it will not be massive.

“From my experience, the World Cup years have always been very quiet until the end of the World Cup, with no players reachable.

“Everybody is focused in the country on their national team and there’s not a lot happening. People are away.

“I believe this year again you will have to wait until July 15 to start going.

“You are not the only one who decides when the business is done because it’s down to availability of players and the clubs who sell decide that.”

Wenger could be right in that Arsenal is close to a team of world beaters, but there remains a hole that needs to be filled with a striker an absolute necessity which according to today’s press may be Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata.

While Morata may be good he is as yet not the calibre of player the Gunners need to win the Premiership yet at the same club they got Morata from sits Karim Benzema and Angel di Maria two players Wenger could easily sign if he was to just open the cheque book.

Since signing his new deal the Gunners boss has come out with a completely different approach to his previous comments by saying: “What I can promise is that we work very hard on a market that is very, very congested with many people who have a lot of money. But we have a big advantage, players want to join us and if we find the right quality I’m sure we can strengthen the team.”

At last some confident words, and after the signing of Mesut Özil Wenger proved he can spend money let’s just hope he does not wait too long this summer and buy those key players that will make Arsenal a contender.
