Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers had given up all hope of signing Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno after the Spanish club said they would not let him leave for less than £20 million.

According to the Daily Star Reds managing director Ian Ayre has flown to Spain adding to speculation that a deal is back on for the 22-year-old, and also that Liverpool is going to sign Atletico Madrid right-back Javier Manquillo on a two-year loan.

Meanwhile Liverpool and England midfielder Jordan Henderson has revealed that former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson did him a favour by criticising him in his controversial autobiography.

Sir Alex claimed that he would never sign the former Sunderland player because of his running style that would lead to injuries later in his career.

At the time of the book publishing Henderson was out injured and was not looking as though he would ever live up to the £20 million Liverpool had paid Sunderland for the midfielder.

“Possibly that did happen when he said that,” said Henderson, following Liverpool friendly win over Manchester City in New York.

“To be honest I took it as a compliment that someone like that was looking to buy me.

“I see that as a real compliment and it didn’t really affect me, I wasn’t really bothered about it.

“It probably did get everyone behind me.

“Maybe he did do me a favour, although I think performances do that too.

“When you’re playing well the fans can see you’re giving everything and will get behind you.

“Every time I go out I give everything and they can see that.”
