Manchester United tried to sign football icon during the summer

Flush with cash going into the summer Manchester United Vice-chairman Ed Woodward was determined to do his best and bring a marquee striker to Old Trafford.

Unfortunately a deal was not completed after Barcelona rejected out of hand that they would sell Neymar to the Red Devils according to the Brazilian forward’s father Neymar da Silva.

While speaking to Good Afternoon on Fox the Barcelona striker’s father said: ‘The proposal came to Barcelona and the club told us they would not sell him.’

‘They asked if we were interested, but it was not the case.

‘Barcelona does not sell because it has a three-year contract [with Neymar] ahead.

‘It was a project of Manchester United. Only to not have this proposal anymore, it fell behind.’

In the end after having failed to land the big name the club wanted they made a deadline day £36 million bid for Monaco forward Anthony Martial, who having hit the ground running in Manchester could prove that missing out on Neymar was a blessing in disguise.
