Manchester United

2013 was a crucial year in the history of the greatest English club, Manchester United.

25 years’ service of Sir Alex Ferguson as manager and 8 years’ service of David Gill chief executive of Manchester United came to an end.

There has been a change ever since in the day-to-day running of the club especially in the transfer market.

The appointment of Louis Van Gaal after the sacking of David Moyes last season has brought lot of confidence back to the team but the 7th place finish for Manchester United in the 2013/2014 season clearly leaves the team right in the mud.

It will take something special for Ed Woodward to bring world class players to Manchester United since most will want to play champions league football.

The capturing of Juan Mata showed clearly Manchester United is still a name to be reckoned with, but how long will United hang on the hopes of unhappy top players in their various club sides? If the question is to be answered, Manchester United must get back to Europe in the 2014/2015 season under Louis Van Gaal.

Unlike before, Manchester United transfers under Ed Woodward have been a case of ‘chasing so many and catching none’.

Sir Alex Ferguson and David Gill were always on the cover with transfers that you only get to have an idea when the player is been unveiled. There must be a secret behind their successful smooth ride in the market which Ed will need to gain in on.

The quick signing of Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera looked promising but Manchester United fans are growing frustrated without any transfer activity with about 16 days to the end of transfer dealings.

It’s clear the team needs the influence of some top world class players to support the attacking trio Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie.

Despite the arrival of Herrera, Manchester United midfield is a big suspect.

A position Sir Alex Ferguson had to bring back Paul Scholes from retirement to help out with at a time.

The recent link to Arturo Vidal and Angel di Maria is a big lift and if confirmed, these two players will turn around the fortunes of the team.

The defence on the other hand is presently unstable with 3 senior centre backs in Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans.

At least a strong composed centre back must be added after the departure of Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra in the summer.

With Louis Van Gaal opting for a formation that will favour 3 defenders, Manchester United definitely will have to reinforce in this department as Will Keane and Tyler Blackett are only promising back-ups.

Manchester United probably have a large squad for a team not competing in Europe and it’s expedient to offload fringe players like Nani, Anderson and others to relieve the wage budget which will also help in acquisition of some of the required top talents.

If Manchester United is to get back to where they were, signing of top players should be a priority now more than ever with release of unneeded players.

Most clubs and players knows Manchester United’s present predicament and they are all ready to exploit it with a big money transfer and salary as the case may be.

Manchester United on the other hand is trying to be careful not to spend out of urgency. If anything close to success is to be achieved soon enough, there must be a balance.
