Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is expected to spend as much as £200 million this summer on new players, and while he has got the first one on board (Memphis Depay) many of his top choices are turning down the chance to move to Old Trafford.

The latest summer target to say no is Lazio central defender   Stefan de Vrij who has let his suitors, which include Manchester United know that he intends to remain in the Italian capital.

The 23-year-old has also let it be known that his decision to stay with Lazio has nothing to do with whether or not they qualify for the Champions League.

“I’m happy at Lazio and I’ll still be here next year,” he told Fox Sports.

“I hope to play in the Champions League with this shirt, but that doesn’t determine my future. If we don’t qualify, it wouldn’t change anything – I want to stay here.

“Here in Rome, I’ve learned a lot and become a better defender. I’m really happy with the choice I made.”
