Manchester United is set to make Real Madrid a £30 million offer for French international defender Raphael Varane, after reports suggest he is becoming disgruntled by his role at the Santiago Bernabeu in not being able to secure a permanent role in trainer Carlo Ancelotti’s first team.

His ambitions received a further blow this past week after it emerged that Real Madrid were preparing to offer his defensive rival Pepe a new contract.

Manchester United see this as an opportunity to sign the 21-year-old, but they may still have to battle Chelsea for his signature after Jose Mourinho, who knows the player well from his time in the Spanish capital called Varane along with Chelsea’s Kurt Zouma the best two young defenders in the world.

And while Varane may be drawn to Chelsea and Mourinho he knows that he will have more chance for first team football at United, with John Terry, Gary Cahill and Kurt Zouma to compete with at Stamford Bridge.
