Late last year Manchester United was being linked with River Plate centre back Éder Álvarez Balanta, but a move did not happen in January.

Yet based on the 22-year-olds performance in the Primera División so far this season there will be plenty of European clubs interested in signing him this summer including Manchester United.

The Colombian internationals stock rose significantly after he played a full ninety minutes for Colombia against Japan in last summer’s World Cup in Brazil which helped to justify the £12.5 million price tag River Plate are asking for him.

Club president Matias Patanian said: “Of course we would want to sell our players to the team that gets closest to our value.

“If the amount of money that the newspaper mentions is true and we receive an offer like that, then River could sit down and start negotiations as it would be close to the amount the club expects for transferring Balanta.”

On Fifa’s official website describes the defender as a “left-footed, powerfully built, strong in the air and a fearless tackler … blessed with skill and speed“.

He showed his skills off to good effect during a recent Copa Libertadores match against Mexican side Tigres, when he went past two players before doing a Zidane move to leave the third player for dead.
