If we go back a couple of months all the football headlines were telling us that Sporting Lisbon’s defensive midfielder William Carvalho had joined Manchester United for a fee of £37.5 million.

This all of course followed on from the 21-year-olds agent being given a tour of the clubs Carrington training facilities.

The report also said that he would be signed before the World Cup and that Manchester United had no problem in meeting Sporting’s £37.5 million release clause.

Everything now seems to have changed with French sports daily L’Equipe saying that Ligue 1 side Monaco have all but secured Sporting manager Leonardo Jardim to take over the Riviera club, and that he will be bringing Carvalho with him as well.
