The Southampton midfield enforcer Morgan Schneiderlin is a top transfer target for both Arsenal and Tottenham, and yet knowing this United manager Louis van Gaal is set to gazump the pair by offering the Saints £25 million this January to strengthen their Champions League hopes of a top-four finish.

With Serie A side Roma refusing to sell Kevin Strootman, United have switched their focus to the 25-year-old French international who played a big part in helping Southampton to their first ever Premiership win at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Following the match in which United lost 0-1 former Red Devil defender Gary Neville had this to say: “I think he could play at any of the top clubs in the league, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United or Arsenal – he’s showed his quality this season.

“You looked at Schneiderlin and [Jose] Fonte at Old Trafford, there was no sweat on them. They were composed and organised.”
