Desperate to sign a world-class striker this summer following the departure of Radamel Falcao and the fact Robin van Persie is not the player he once was Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has held talks with the agent of Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema.

The 27-year-old French international has in recent months been linked with a move to Old Trafford should Madrid decide to let him leave, and now with new manager Rafa Benitez at the helm there could be a summer of big changes at the Santiago Bernabeu.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Woodward was seen at the Savoy Hotel in London meeting with Benzema’s agent Karim Djaziri earlier in the week leading to speculation that United could be prepared to pay as much as £40 million to lure Benzema to the Premiership.

The Red Devils also hold the trump card in the form of goalkeeper David De Gea, and know that if the 24-year-old Spaniard is determined to join Real Madrid they may as well use it to their advantage as a bargaining chip for the French striker.
