Following the reoccurrence of AS Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman’s knee injury, Manchester United have now decided to turn their attention to German international Lars Bender.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal may however have to go up against Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger who has already made it known that the Gunners will be looking to sign a world-class defensive midfielder during the summer.

Top United scout Jim Lawlor was present for last week’s Champions League encounter between Benders Bayer Leverkusen and Atletico Madrid, and then again against Freiburg.

Leverkusen is in the position to let Bender leave in the summer as they already have cover in the form of Christoph Kramer.

Kramer is currently on loan at to Borussia Moenchengladbach till the end of the season, but will return to the Westphalia club allowing them to sell Bender.

All round it could prove to be a good deal for Manchester United as the 25-year-old German is valued at just £12 million, and were Roma to sell Strootman they would be asking four times that amount.
