Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has signalled out the right-back position as a place that needed filling this January with Southampton defender Nathaniel Clyne is emerging as the clubs top target.

A scouting delegation from Old Trafford was sent to assess the 23-year-old during Southampton’s 2-1 away to Newcastle last weekend, and after having already signed one player from the Saints Luke Shaw for £28 million during the summer the England debutant could be next.

United has also been linked with Everton’s Seamus Coleman who was the Red Devils preferred choice while David Moyes was still in charge.

In other United news West Bromwich Albion has now emerged as favourites to sign United vice-captain Darren Fletcher with West Ham and Spanish la Liga side Valencia also interested in the 30-year-old Scottish international.

Fletcher is out of contract next summer and a move to the Hawthorns would allow his family to remain in their south Cheshire home giving Fletcher a short one hour commute to Albion’s training complex.
