Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal reacted angrily when journalists questioned him as to the future of midfielder Ander Herrera.

Manchester United signed the 25-year-old last summer, paying Athletic Bilbao £29 million to bring him to Old Trafford, and despite such a hefty fee he has not started a game since the second of December leading the press to ask questions about his future.

Van Gaal however was not impressed with this type of questioning, and the media’s desire to focus on players who were not in the team.

“You are always asking about the player who is not playing,” he said.

“Three weeks ago it was (Radamel) Falcao. Next week it will be about another player who is not playing. It is unbelievable.

“I can only line up 11 players.”

When the question about how much United paid for him was brought up, van Gaal insisted that price was not an issue in whether a player played or not.

“It is not so interesting that you talk about the pounds (fee paid),” he added.

“Paddy McNair is also important and he cost nothing, so I do not agree.

“I am not discussing this (the omission of Herrera) with you.”
