Forget about game of thrones as a much bigger battle is about to take place now that Manchester City has decided to go up against cross town rivals Manchester United for Valencia centre-back Nicolas Otamendi.

City manager Manuel Pellegrini is planning a major shake-up at the Etihad this summer and has identified the Argentinian international as a player he would like to take on board.

Pellegrini is determined to knock Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho off his high-horse next season, and thinks that the tough-tackling Otamendi is a player who can help him do it.

Manchester United meanwhile are the front runners in the race, but are balking over Valencia’s £35 million asking price and could well drop out of the race should Sergio Ramos become a part of the deal for goalkeeper David De Gea.

This then opens up another battle for City as Real Madrid will move for the 27-year-old to replace their departing Spanish international.

The ball is in City’s court, and if they are smart they will activate the release clause now while Real Madrid and Manchester United struggle to put the De Gea deal together.
