Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has put his foot down telling 19-year-old left-back Luke Shaw that he will not be allowed to play in this summer’s U-21 Europeans Championships in the Czech Republic.

The teenager has been plagued with injuries in his first season at Old Trafford following last summer’s £27 million move from Southampton, and will be missing this Sundays match against Arsenal after taking a blow to the face last week against Crystal Palace.

This has led van Gaal to say that he thinks the youngster needs the summer off to rest up for next season.

He said: “I don’t think he can go. No. When he is not playing for Manchester United, he cannot play for other teams neither.

“That extends to the summer. He needs that rest.

“He crossed over his limits and that’s why. He is 19 years old, what can you expect?

“We have to protect him. I hope the coach of the U21s is understandable of that.”
