Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has apparently approached his former club Bayern Munich seeking to sign Bastian Schweinsteiger in what would be a bargain £10 million deal.

The 63-year-old Dutchman is confident that he can lure the World Cup winner to Old Trafford this summer after a senior figure at Old Trafford told the Daily Star: “Yes, Bastian Schweinsteiger is someone we are interested in signing.”

It is believed that the German midfielder was in Manchester recently and met with officials from the club expressing his desire for a possible summer move.

The United boss is desperate to add strength to his midfield and is looking to sign two top players this summer to help make Manchester United the powerhouse they once were, and sees the 30-year-old Schweinsteiger as a man who can help him achieve his goals.

The German international has only one-year remaining on his current contract at the Allianz Arena and could be had for as little as £10 million.

Bayern for their part will be reluctant to sell but should the midfielder relish a new challenge the Bavarian club may be powerless to stop him leaving.
