Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has dropped what may be the biggest hint yet that the Red devils were in pursuit of former United player Cristiano Ronaldo, after acting all strange and going quiet when asked if a deal was on the cards, before giving a cryptic answer.

The Portuguese international winger is believed to be unhappy at Real Madrid following the way the club dismissed long-time servant Iker Casillas to Porto in order to make room for David De Gea at the Santiago Bernabeu, while at the same time not impressed with new coach Rafa Benitez’s idea to use him as a more central striker in order to provide more space for Welsh international Gareth Bale.

‘Ronaldo to United? I never answer the question because I cannot answer the question,’ he said.

‘I want to.

‘But it is not good for Manchester United, it is not good for the player and it is not good for me.’
