Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is set to make a surprise move by signing Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole who will be available as a free agent this summer.

Rodger’s knows the 33-year-old well after his time as a coach at Stamford Bridge before moving on to Watford in 2008.

The Daily Star newspaper is reporting that the England international future with Chelsea is in doubt after manager Jose Mourinho has decided to play right-back Cesar Azpilicueta out of position rather than playing Cole.

Despite the fact Cole knows he would face competition from 21-year-old Jon Flanagan Cole is said to be excited about the prospect of joining Liverpool.

MLS team the New York Red Bulls are also interested in Cole as is the LA Galaxy on signing Cole’s teammate Frank Lampard who is thought to have a two-year-deal on offer with a salary of $72,000 per-week if he should decide to finish his career in the U.S.A.
