This one would be a turn up for the books if the usually spot on publication L’Equipe is correct saying that Liverpool has still not given up hope on signing Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette, despite having already signed Belgium international front-man Christian Benteke from Aston Villa for £32.5 million.
And it is not only Liverpool who are interested with Arsenal and Manchester United also thought to be keen after having watched the French international score 27 goals in 33 Ligue 1 starts for Lyon last season.
If you look at Liverpool’s situation another way you can see why the club would like to take the 24-year-old on-board, when you consider that Rickie Lambert, Mario Balotelli and Fabio Borini are all heading for the Anfield exit, it leaves only former Burnley striker Danny Ings along with Benteke as the Reds only two strikers, and yes we know they also have Belgium youngster Divock Origi, who if you happened to watch any of Liverpool’s pre-season games would know that the 20-year-old is not quite ready for prime time just yet.
Liverpool of course do not have Champions League football to offer Lacazette next season, but if manager Brendan Rodgers can get him to see the big picture he is putting together on Merseyside it might just persuade the Ligue 1 top-scorer to jump ship.
The transfer fee being talked about is £21.7 million, a sum Lyon would have a hard time turning down, but two factors still remain from stopping Liverpool from signing him, and they are does he really want to move, and will Arsenal and Manchester United compete with Liverpool for his signature.
