Liverpool’s Brazilian playmaker Philippe Coutinho has admitted that he was shocked to see England knocked out of the World Cup after just two matches, but admits it could end up being a good thing for Liverpool to see all their players come home early uninjured.

“It surprised me because I thought they would go further,” he told Brazilian sports magazine Placar.

He then jokingly said: “I thought they would meet Brazil in the final! But on the other hand this is even a good thing as my Liverpool team-mates will be more rested for the pre-season.”

The young Brazilian was full of praise for Luis Suarez after the Uruguayan scored two goals right after returning from knee surgery to beat England 2-1.

“Suarez is a big friend, I am happy for him. He returned and managed to help his national team. We know the difficulties he has gone through,” he continued.

Coutinho then expressed his desire to get back to playing football saying that he was ready for the pre-season to start next month.

“I am very anxious. I cannot wait to start the pre-season,” he said. “A week here, watching games on television, is already driving me crazy.”
