LIVERPOOL have finally triggered the £15 million release clause in Swansea midfielderJoe Allen’s contract, as it emerged they have rejected a £20m bid from Manchester City for Daniel Agger.
Anfield officials made the offer for Allen, 22, following his Olympic elimination with Team GB on Sunday and hope to tie up the deal in the coming days.
Allen, right, is set to meet new Swansea manager Michael Laudrup today for talks, but will hope to move to Merseyside as soon as possible.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, whose side play FC Gomel of Belarus in the second leg of their Europa League qualifier tonight, admitted that he could sacrifice Agger if a “ridiculous”bid is forthcoming from Manchester City.
It is thought Liverpool are seeking between £27m and £30m for Agger and are keen on Adam Johnson on loan as part of the deal.
“Top centre-halves are at a premium,” said Rodgers. “We don’t want to sell Daniel, so unless someone comes in with a ridiculous offer we won’t.”
Luis Suarez will start against Gomel, who trail 1-0 from the first leg, but Andy Carroll looks likely to miss out again.”
