Reports coming out of Portugal are saying that Liverpool is now leading the race to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho edging out Manchester United who met with his agent back in January according to the Daily Star.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has made no mystery of the fact that the Reds must strengthen their squad after having conceded 50 goals last season and see Carvalho as being vital in that department.

It was former United boss David Moyes that wanted to sign the Portuguese international, and now that he is gone what the new manager has in mind no one knows.

The 22-year-old has a buyout clause of £37 million a price that would supersede what they paid to Newcastle united for Andy Carroll making Carvalho the clubs biggest ever signing.
