Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is desperate for more strength in the middle of the park and has seen 22-year-old Lazio midfielder Ogenyi Onazi as the man he wants.

Lazio has long been interested in Borini and Rodgers now wants to temp them into letting Onazi move to Merseyside by offering the Italian striker plus £8 million.

The Liverpool boss went after the midfield enforcer during the summer, but opted for Bayer Leverkusen’s Emre Can instead.

Borini has failed to impress since his return from a loan spell at Sunderland, and Rodgers has now decided it is time to move him on as he considers an early return of Divock Origi from Lille.
