Liverpool is keeping a close eye on contract negotiations with Manchester City’s James Milner and should the talks show any signs of breaking down the Reds are ready to pounce on the England international before Arsenal.

City however remain confident that the former Aston Villa man will commit his future to the blue side of Manchester just as teammates Joe Hart, Sergio Aguero, David Silva, Vincent Kompany, Samir Nasri, Edin Dzeko and Aleksandar Kolarov have done.

Despite taking part in all but two City games this season the 28-year-old England international is concerned that once manager Manuel Pellegrini has a fully fit squad and goes to the market for new signings he could once again become a bit player at the Etihad.

Pellegrini is however desperate for Milner to sign telling the Daily Express: “I think they are continuing to have conversations and we hope he’ll arrive at it soon.”

“I always say he’s a very important player for us. He always makes a contribution whether he starts or comes on.”
