Liverpool look set to miss out on signing Clint Dempsey this summer after failing to agree a fee with Fulham.

Liverpool 'face Clint Dempsey disappointment as no fee agreed'

New Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is a huge fan of the American forward and wants to bring him to Anfield, but he is not impressed by the £10million price tag Fulham have slapped on him.

Dempsey has been left at home while Cottagers chief Martin Jol holds a training camp in Switzerland as his future remains uncertain.

But according to the Sunday Mirror, it could be that Italian outfit Roma are now the most likely to snap up the attacker rather than Liverpool.

Roma have money to spend after cashing in on £12million striker Fabio Borini, who has moved to Merseyside.

Former England assistant Franco Baldini, who is now general manager at the Italian club, has good contacts at Fulham and has been alerted to the stand-off between the west London club and Liverpool over Dempsey.

The player would rather remain in the Premier League and secure a high-profile switch to Anfield, but if Rodgers refuses to get close to Fulham’s asking price the deal looks to be dead.

However, the ex-Swansea boss can be more confident of landing Joe Allen from his former club after Liverpool’s owners the Fenway Sports Group gave the green light to a £15million bid.
