Despite failing to sign Manchester City defender Micah Richards on loan in January Liverpool is preparing to fight AC Milan for the defenders signature this summer.

The 25-year-old Richards is expected to leave the Etihad this summer after refusing to sign a new five-year-deal with the club which will see his 13-year association with the club he joined as a schoolboy in 2001 come to an end.

The form of Pablo Zabaleta and a series of injuries have seen the once promising player being reduced to a role on the side-lines with City now looking to cash in on him in the summer rather than let him walk away for nothing.

AC Milan are interested in the right back after recommendations from former teammate Mario Balotelli yet it is Liverpool who may hold the cards for the right- back after seeing how former City academy player Daniel Sturridge has resurrected his career under Brendan Rodgers at Anfield.
