LINE-UP: Arsenal team to play Southampton

The last game of the year for Arsenal will be looked on by manger Arsene Wenger as a chance for the Gunners to go top of the table.

Current leaders Leicester City face a tricky test away to Liverpool, where Reds manager Jürgen Klopp will be looking to get his team back to winning ways following a humiliating 3-0 loss against Watford last time out.

If we think back nearly a year it was Arsenal’s trip to Southampton where the wheels came off the bus after the 2-0 loss, while at the same time ending Wojciech Szczesny’s reign as the Gunners No.1 goalkeeper.

Some bad news for Arsenal is that Alexis Sanchez is still not available due to aggravating his strain during training. In the end however it could serve the Chilean international well as it will feel as if he has had a winter break when he returns to the team around the 10th of January.

Goalkeeper
This time round it should prove to be a different story with the ever reliable Petr Cech now firmly entrenched as Arsenals starting goalkeeper ever since his £10 million move from Chelsea during the summer.

Defence
With all four regular starters available it is hard to imagine Wenger making any changes at the back, so expect to see Nacho Monreal, Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny and Hector Bellerin start this afternoon at St Mary’s.

Midfield
This is where the Gunners boss has limited options, but with no new injuries to report we can expect to see Aaron Ramsey play alongside Mathieu Flamini, with Welshman Ramsey almost certainly to have been told by Wenger to limit his runs forward as it exposed Flamini time and again against Manchester City, and is something Saints boss Ronald Koeman is sure to have picked up on.

Assist King Mesut Ozil will be looking to add to his tally as he controls play up the field, with Theo Walcott and Joel Campbell playing either side.

Attack
Once more Olivier Giroud will be called upon to lead the attack, with us fancying the French man to score anytime at odds of 5/4 with BET365.
Arsenal will be in high spirits following their 2-1 win over Manchester City on Monday night, and with Southampton in a bit of a slump we fancy Arsenal to reverse last New Year’s Day result and win the match 0-2 at odds of 10/1 with BET365.
