LIVERPOOL last night made former Holland manager Louis van Gaal their shock No 1 choice as new boss.

Kop Van chase

Sources close to the Dutchman, 60, say he has been approached by Kop managing director Ian Ayre to replace axed Kenny Dalglish.

Van Gaal has vast experience with big clubs having managed Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich — and is out of work.

He was being considered for the newly-created role of sporting director but had revealed his interest in the managerial hotseat.

The club’s American owners hinted they wanted a young manager.

But chief John W Henry is said to be impressed with Van Gaal’s reputation for rebuilding teams and guiding them to success.
