RAMOS WILL FACE ATLÉTICO DESPITE INJURY STRUGGLES

By ULISES SÁNCHEZ-FLOR

All things being normal or if it were any old match, Sergio Ramos wouldn’t play on Friday. The Andalusian is still yet to return to full training, although he has at least begun working with the ball, albeit on his own. There are only two training sessions before Real Madrid takes on Atlético, but this is no ordinary player we are talking about: iron-man Ramos wouldn’t miss the ‘Copa del Rey’ final for the world.

Ramos has had to take a step back since he was laid low in the Champions League semi-final second leg against Borussia Dortmund. He ended the match with the tank running on empty. His gargantuan efforts to drag his team to a famous comeback had taken their toll on him. While the club doesn’t make official medical bulletins available, it is fair to say the defender ended up with more scrapes than a rally car. He’s a tough cookie and can handle the rumble-tumble, but he’s by no means unbreakable.

The Andalusian had pain all over his body after the Dortmund patch and has been forced to rest up since then, with some physiotherapy the full extent of his exertions. Two weeks out of squad training speaks volumes, as does missing league clashes with Valladolid, Málaga and Espanyol. Presuming he does feature in the cup final, he will be playing through the pain barrier to do so. Nevertheless, there is a conspicuous lack of alarm bells at the Bernabéu because, as everyone at the club always says, “the lad can put up with anything”.
