Mark Hughes looks set to continue his bust summer in the transfer market for Stoke by signing former Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson on a free transfer.

The 30-year-old England international left Liverpool this summer on a free transfer after the Reds were only prepared to offer him a one year contract due to his age, and now appears ready to sign for the Potters as a free agent.

Johnson would mark the sixth signing of the summer for Stoke after having added Philipp Wollscheid, goalkeepers Jakob Haugaard and Shay Given, striker Joselu and midfielder Marco van Ginkel to their team.

Although a deal has not yet been completed Stoke boss Hughes admitted the former Liverpool man would bring with him some much needed experience.

‘Glen’s a very experienced player, we obviously feel that the qualities that he has will help us,’ Hughes said.

‘We’re a team that’s trying to progress and you do that by getting good players into your squad and they will help us.

‘Glen has played at a high level for a very long time and we can benefit from that.’
