After a difficult first season that saw Marouane Fellaini follow Everton manager David Moyes to Old Trafford for £27.5 million the Belgium international has never lived up to his expensive price tag spending most of his time on the bench.

Now following the sacking of Moyes and the expected arrival of Louis van Gall the 6ft 4in midfielder says he is looking ahead to the new season while telling the Daily Telegraph of the problems he encountered at United since the move from Goodison Park.

“I need to be fit to be good,” he says, simply. “Even when I am injured I can play but the fitness is not the same.”

Fellaini is referring to an injured wrist following a game against Shakhtar Donetsk on Oct 2 which was only his third game for his new club.

“I was injured for three months and that was a difficult moment for me. When you arrive in a new team you want to play, you want to stay with the team and when you can’t play it is difficult to see the team – even off the pitch.

When this season finishes I will start with my preparation for the next year and it will be good.”
