Falcao set for Bernabeu debut

DAVID G. MEDINA

Saturday is going to be a special day for Falcao. The Colombian, Atlético’s undisputed star is set to play his first game in the Bernabeu. He couldn’t play last season due to the hamstring injury he suffered whilst playing with his national team. ‘The Tiger’ didn’t play at the Bernabeu with his previous club Porto either, during the two seasons he spent as the ‘Dragons’ striker.

The game is set to attract a great deal of interest, given the rumours that have linked the striker with Real Madrid. Rumours that have been confirmed neither by the club nor the player, but which have resurfaced since Falcao’s father stated recently that it was his son’s “dream” to play for Real Madrid, something the player denied on Twitter.

The Colombian didn’t play in Tuesday’s Spanish Cup game against Jaén – he didn’t even make the squad – in an attempt to limit the risk of him getting injured. In Atlético’s previous game, against Sevilla, Falcao rediscovered his eye for goal, scoring from the penalty spot. He hadn’t scored in three games and that goal took his tally to 14 goals for the season: eleven in the league and three in the European Super Cup.

Simeone is limiting Falcao’s playing time and the striker has yet to play in the Spanish Cup or the Europa League this season. The Argentine coach has chosen to rest his top goalscorer in seven games.
