Coentrao, Ancelotti, Real Madrid,

Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that Real Madrid defender Fabio Coentrao has asked to leave the club.

The Portuguese international left-back has been left out of the squad for the season opener against Real Betis today with the Italian manager saying: ‘he has asked to leave’.

Coentrao has been linked with Spurs, but his desire to play in the Champions League may be a hindrance for the north London club should they decide to try and sign him.

The 25-year-old joined Madrid from Benfica back in the summer of 2011 for £25 million, but it is thought that Spurs will only go as far as offering £17 million for him.

This is all happening while the Gareth bale saga continues to play out, and it could be that Spurs will get Coentrao as part of a deal that see’s the Welshman move to the Bernabeu.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti says he is very happy with his squad going into the new season, but the addition of Bale would be an added bonus as ‘great players always bring things to a team’
