Former Liverpool defender and now Sky Sports football pundit Jamie Carragher has annoyed the Blue side of Liverpool once more by saying that his former club should take a short walk across Stanley Park and sign Everton midfielder James McCarthy.

With Steven Gerrard set to leave Anfield this summer to go and play in the MLS for the LA Galaxy, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is already looking for his replacement with Carragher suggesting he does not have to look far in order to find the 24-year-old Irish international.

‘I love McCarthy, I think he’s a brilliant player,’ Carragher told the Irish Examiner.

‘If there was one player I could take from Everton to Liverpool, it would be James McCarthy. I think he’s just got to add goals. Jordan Henderson was maybe at that stage a year ago, where you really like what you see but there could be a few more goals or assists to take him up another level.

‘Even though James McCarthy plays a more defensive role, he’s shown he can get forward. He’s a complete midfield player — he works hard, he can tackle, he can pass. I think eventually he’ll be the captain there.’

McCarthy joined Everton for Wigan Athletic in 2013 scoring just one goal in 19 appearances for Roberto Martinez’s side so far this season.
