The first black keeper to play for England says there is no longer a problem with racism in football.

Anti-racism campaigners such as Kick It Out have been prominent in recent weeks, with cases like the one involving John Terry and Anton Ferdinand.

Yet James, 42, said: “I struggle with the racist issue as I don’t see it. The game’s changed.

“There are some wonderful organisations. But the organisations which have done so much good are still employed looking for stuff to shout about.

“It’s more about people driving the issue than the issue being a real focus. Some have an agenda to keep themselves in existence.”

But FA director Heather Rabbatts said: “Racism remains a major issue.”
